Albany Pride is planning a peaceful demonstration outside the City of Albany to protest the Special Electors Meeting on the 26th August 2024.

Details:

– Arrive at 5:30pm to gather prior to the meeting commencing at 6:30pm
– Wear your Pride colours
– Parking is limited: there is overflow parking at Retravision Stadium
– Bring Jackets/Umbrellas/Thermos/Food/headphones as required – we protest in all weather

While we acknowledge the right of any citizen to request a meeting such as this, and we are not attempting to divert this democratic process, we know that the premise of this particular meeting is ridiculous and designed to create fear and division within the broader community. We don’t think that these views are supported by the majority of Albany residents.

Albany Pride is not recommending that we fill the meeting room in order to vote down the proposals made on the night. While ideally the proposals will not pass, they are not binding if they do, and we have faith that they will be discussed fairly in the following Ordinary Council Meeting in September.

Albany Pride recognises that some people will want to attend the meeting inside. There will be an Albany Pride representative speaking in the meeting. However our strength will be in our numbers outside and we invite you to join us there.

What do we mean by peaceful protest? We intend to gather together in order to support one another and demonstrate the strength of our community. We will limit interactions with our detractors and we will avoid inflammatory or aggressive behaviour.

We recognise the impact that the last few months have had on the community and the distress it has caused. Please self-assess your capacity to attend in person, and remember that there are many other ways to help and support your community if you cannot. ❤️
